The purpose of this study is to understand the material properties of manufacturable high-purity iron and high-purity iron-based alloy in present technology and to get an applicable prospect for the structural and functional material of the frontier fast reactor. Then the about 10kg high-purity iron and iron-based alloy were melted using a cold-crucible induction melting furnace under the ultra-high vacuum. Subsequent to that, the compatibility between the melted material and the high-temperature sodium environment which is a special feature of the fast reactor and tensile property at room and elevated temperatures were investigated using the melted materials. Also, the creep test using the high-purity 50%Cr-Fe alloy at 550$$^{circ}$$C in air in order to understand the high temperature creep property. ln addition, the material properties such as thermal expansion coefficient, specific heat and electrical resistance were measured and to evaluate the outlook for the structural material for the fast reactor. The following results were obtained based on the property test and evaluation. (1)lt was possible to melt the about 10kg high-purity ingot and high-purity 50%Cr-Fe alloy ingot using a cold-crucible induction melting furnace under the ultra-high vacuum. (2)The tensile tests of the high-purity 50%Cr-Fe alloy were performed at room and elevated temperatures in order to understand the deformation behavior. From the experimental results, it was clear that the high-purity 50%Cr-Fe alloy possesses high strength and good ductility at elevated temperatures. (3)The physical properties (the thermal expansion coefficient and specific heat etc.) were measured using the high-purity 50%Cr-Fe alloy. lt was clear that the thermal expansion coefficient of high-purity 50%Cr-Fe alloy was smaller than that of SUS304. (4)From the corrosion test in liquid sodium, the ordinary-purity iron showed the weight loss after corrosion test. However the high-purity iron showed ...

Engineering ceramics have excellent properties such as high strength, high hardness and high heat resistance compared with metallic matelials. To apply the ceramic in fast reactor environment, it is necessary to evaluate the sodium compatibility and the influence of sodium on the mechanical properties of ceramics. In this study, the influence of high temperature sodium on the mechanical properties of sintered ceramics of conventional and high purity Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$, SiC, SiAlON, AlN and unidirectional solidified ceramics of Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$/YAG eutectic composite were investigated by means of flexure tests. Test specimens were exposed in liquid sodium at 823K and 923K for 3.6Ms. There were no changes in the flexural strength of the conventional and high purity Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$, AlN and Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$/YAG eutectic composite after the sodium exposure at 823K. On the contrary, the decrease in the flexural strength was observed in SiC and SiAlON. After the sodium exposure at 923K, there were also no changes in the flexural strength of AlN and Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$/YAG eutectic composite. In the conventional and high purity Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ and SiC, the flexural strength decreased and signs of grain boundary corrosion were detected by surface observation. The flexural strength of SiAlON after the sodium exposure at 923K increased instead of severe corrosion. In the specimens those showed no changes in the flexural strength, further exposure in sodium is needed to verify whether the mechanical properties degrade or not. For SiAlON, it is necessary to clarify the reason for the increased strength after the sodium exposure at 923K.

The Sodium-water reaction product removal test by use of cold trap; SWAT-3 RECT-II test

PNC-TN941-85-127.pdf:3.25MB

RECT-II (the Removal test of reaction products by cold trap) was conducted by use of SWAT-3 (the Steam Generator Safety Test Facility) at PNC in order to construct the post-accident operation of steam generators of the prototype FBR Monju and a larger plant following it. In prior to the test, some amount of the sodium-water reaction products (SWRP) generated in the water injection test (Run 18) was remained in the sodium system. An objective of the test is to confirm the purifying method to remove SWRP by hot sodium circulating through a cold trap (CT). A meshless type cold trap was selected to avoid choking by impurities and to enable efficient SWRP removal. RECT-II started on April 4, 1984 and terminated on April 26 when the plugging temperature decreased to 187$$^{circ}$$C. Major results obtained in the test are as follows: (1)Post-test observation revealed that the SWRP having remained at the bottom of the evaporator and the sodium outlet pipe were completely removed through the purification operation. (2)Hence, it is concluded that after the hot draining the SWRP of 14 kg-H$$_{2}$$0 remained in the sodium system out of that generated by the 42 kg-H$$_{2}$$0 injection and that almost all of the former was removed through the operation. (3)However, some amount of the hydrocarbon-oxide and SWRP in the slit articles simulating crevice and stagnant region still remained after the operation. Then it is concluded that it is insufficient to remove SWRP in crevice and stagnant region by the circulation of hot sodium. (4)A mass transfer coefficient of oxygen is evaluated as 2 $$times$$ 10$$^{-4}$$ [g/(mm H ppm)] if the cross section of the evaporator and inner surface of the 8 inch horizontal pipe are assumed to be the entire surface area of SWRP. (5)Since the choking of the cold trap degrades the efficient SWRP removal, it is essential to develop a cold trap which hardly chokes and easily regenerates even after choking; one of answers for this request is a ...
